Use PKZIP to Make Data Transfer Faster

Using physical media such as tape or disk to transfer enterprise data is convenient, but challenges often arise getting large data files onto fixed-size media. PKZIP compresses data so that more data fits on fewer volumes. As a result, fewer tapes or disk volumes are required for any given task. And when transferring data, compressed ZIP files shorten the time needed to transmit a file. For busy networks, compressing files in effect creates more usable bandwidth, without additional telecommunications cost, thereby postponing costly telecommunications capacity upgrades.

Using PKZIP, IT organizations can easily streamline data transfer throughout the enterprise. PKZIP, available on all major computing platforms from mainframes-to-midrange-to-servers-to-desktops, also eases system incompatibilities with EBCDIC-to-ASCII translators and self extracting file capabilities.

While data security may have been an option in the past, it is a requirement in today's environment. PKWARE extended the ZIP compression process to include strong security. This product line, SecureZIP, protects the confidentiality of data by adding enterprise-grade encryption to PKZIP's existing compression. Using X.509 digital certificates and the FIPS-197-certified, AES 256-bit algorithm, SecureZIP provides strong, public/private key encryption.

For those enterprises not requiring public/key digital certificate encryption, SecureZIP also supplies FIPS-197-certified AES 256-bit passphrase-based encryption.

In addition to improved performance, PKZIP provides the capability to send multiple datasets or files as one transmission object, simplifying workflow for the IT Manager. PKZIP also provides CRC32 data integrity checking to ensure that the data file has not been modified in transit. SecureZIP expands on this by providing Digital Signing and Authentication to provide assurance that files received were sent by the person(s) identified by the signature(s).
