PKZIP for OpenVMS
PKZIP for OpenVMS version 2.10 now supports both the VAX and Digital Alpha computing platforms. The new support for Alpha complements the VAX support in the previous version of PKZIP for VMS and delivers cost savings for data transfer and storage.
PKZIP for OpenVMS also integrates with the Digital's License Management Facility (LMF) software which provides the information systems manager with better control and accountability over users of PKZIP. The LMF software checks for a Product Authorization Key (PAK) which serves as proof of license to use PKZIP. The PAK also sets a limit on the number of users able to access PKZIP at any one time.
PKZIP for OpenVMS delivers extensive benefits to the IT organization:
- The OpenVMS version of PKZIP is compatible with other versions available for the DOS, OS/2 and Windows platforms, streamlining data transfer among disparate systems.
- PKWARE's patented data compression technology makes it the most efficient data compression program available.
- PKZIP for OpenVMS supports extended OpenVMS file attributes for each file added to a .ZIP file archive.
- OpenVMS attributes can be restored when extracted with PKZIP. These attributes include the record attributes, file characteristics, the creation, revision, expiration and backup dates, number of file revisions, file protection, and owner and journal flags.
- Extensive application help can be integrated into the OpenVMS library through a help file provided with PKZIP for OpenVMS.
- Directory tree structures can be stored in .ZIP file. By retaining subdirectory hierarchy more than one file with the same name can be stored in a .ZIP file.
- Data integrity is ensured by a 32-bit CRC (cyclic redundancy check). The CRC is generated by PKZIP during creation of a new .ZIP file and verifies extracted files have not been corrupted.
- Administrators can select high speed or high compression. The default method is a balance between these extremes. Average file compression is 50-70% with some files compressing 90%.
PKZIP for OpenVMS extends the benefits of ZIP file compression, the standard tool for Enterprise data transfer across different operating systems, to the DEC VAX and Alpha environments. Organizations can realize tremendous cost savings from storing and transferring smaller, compressed files.
