PKZIP for VM
Compress VM data to save cycles, time and money
PKZIP for VM cuts file storage and transmission costs by as much as 90 percent. And since using PKZIP makes data files significantly smaller, it saves cycle and running time on the mainframe, so you can handle more tasks. PKZIP VM zips VM files of up to 4GB and creates a single, compressed archive. In addition, cross platform compatibility speeds the transfer of zip files across platforms, including z/OS, i5/OS, UNIX/Linux/Windows Servers and Windows desktops. To save even more time, PKZIP VM converts between EBCDIC/ASCII and record-oriented/stream-oriented data. And PKZIP VM features 32-bit CRC error checking and encryption to ensure data integrity, and supports CMS and SFS files.
PKZIP for VM provides benefits to the IT organization, helping to save money in many ways.
- Increases efficient use of disk storage space by compressing data up to 90%. A single ZIP archive can compress and store as much as 4GB of data
- Data files can be created on the IBM mainframe that can be read by applications on other operating systems
- EBCDIC-to-ASCII format conversions enable small platform operating systems to read data files
- Protect data using built-in data encryption
- CRC32 error-checking protects data from undetected tampering or hardware failure
- Select the compression rate that's right for the task with four user-selectable choices
- Supports CMS and SFS files
- Restore files quickly and easily by replacing the high-level qualifier(s) and overwriting existing datasets during extraction
- Conversion of record oriented data, used on VM systems, into the stream oriented data, which is typical format of files on PC or UNIX systems.
- REXX routines assist users in file name conversions across platforms
- Improve your existing workflows with the ability to send compressed job output to console, print file, or CMS Program Stack
- Tailored for the VM environment and the way you want to work, supporting alias entries and minidisk extensions
- Archived files can be added, updated, deleted or viewed prior to decompression
- Reduce the cost of data transfers across operating systems by using the standard ZIP format for exchanging data, the format that is universally recognized for packaging data files
- Cut data transmission costs and time up to 10 times
PKZIP on VM makes it easier to store and send large data files. Optional security measures enable quick and easy encryption to protect files in transit or when store on tape or disk.
System requirements:
PKZIP for VM will run on any IBM or compatible host machine running under a VM/ESA operating system. The command line options are executed from a CMS console and can also be invoked as part of an EXEC.
