Secure File Backups with SecureZIP

Recent news reports of lost or stolen backup media highlight the importance of ensuring all backup tapes and disks are encrypted to reduce the risks associated with both onsite and offsite storage. These risks have led major vaulting providers such as Iron Mountain to recommend that customers encrypt their backups.

SecureZIP combines legendary PKZIP compression with strong encryption capabilities, to deliver an ideal solution for efficiently and securely storing and transferring backup files.

PKWARE's ZIP archives provide ideal containers for efficiently storing individual files or complete file sets for both long and short-term backup needs. Portable ZIP files can be copied to physical backup media for transport to a storage facility or transferred via electronic vaulting.

SecureZIP Server, built on PKWARE's trusted compression technology, protects sensitive data with enterprise-grade encryption. Using your X.509 digital certificates with FIPS 197-certified AES 256-bit encryption, SecureZIP provides strong public/private key encryption that integrates easily with your existing backup processing. Alternatively, traditional password encryption can be used if digital certificates are not available for your backup processing.

SecureZIP Server also provides advanced security features such as the following:
  • Contingency key processing - ensures your organization can always decrypt encrypted data
  • Filename encryption - ensures that file metadata such as file names are protected from malicious use
  • Digital signing/authentication - validates identity and integrity to guard against data tampering

SecureZIP Server's flexible command line operation supports easy insertion into your backup workflow. You can insert SecureZIP into the head of your workflow to selectively apply encryption to only those files that are sensitive. This reduces the overall encryption processing time by only encrypting those files that must be protected. Alternatively, you can insert SecureZIP into the end of your workflow to encrypt full backup data sets, ensuring all files and programs remain confidential.

SecureZIP's ability to handle multi-gigabyte files and file sets in excess of 250,000 files make it a good choice for standalone backup needs within the data center.
